Unit 1- Matter and Energy

 - Properties of materials

1-Transparency

Transparent- Light can pass through it. Ej- Glass is transparent.

Opaque- Light can't pass through it. Ej- Metal is opaque.

Translucent- Some light can pass through it. We can't see objects clearly through it.

2- Permeability

Permeable- Water can pass through it. Ej- Fabric is permeable.

Waterproof- Water can't pass through it. Ej-Plastic is waterproof.

3-Fragility

Strong- Difficult to break. Ej- Plastic is strong.

Fragile- Easy to break. Ej- Glass is fragile.

4- Flexibility

Rigid- Difficult to bend. Ej- Wood is rigid.

Flexible- Easy to bend. Ej- Paper is flexible.

5- Hardness

Hard- Difficult to scratch or cut. Ej- Glass is hard.

Soft- Easy to scratch or cut. Ej- Wood is soft.

6- Brightness

Shiny- It reflects much light.Ej- Gold is shiny.

Dull- It reflects little light. Ej- The wall is dull.

7- Conductivity

Conductor- Heat or electricity can flow easily. Ej- Metals are good thermal. conductors.

Insulator- Heat or electricity can't flow easily.Ej- Plastic is insulator.

This ring is made of gold and a diamond. Gold is a metal; shiny, hard and waterproof. A diamond is a mineral; shiny, translucent, hard but fragile.

- Properties of substances

8- Solubility

Soluble- It dissolves in a liquid. Ej- Salt is soluble in water.

Insoluble- It doesn't dissolve in a liquid. Ej- Oil is insoluble in water.
